Free Tile Calculator — Boxes to Order, Cuts Included
Work out how many tiles — and how many boxes — you need for a floor or wall. Enter your area, tile size, grout gap and lay pattern, and the calculator adds the right cutting allowance and rounds your order up to whole boxes.
How to use this calculator
-
Enter the area to tile directly, or enter length and width.
-
Enter your tile size (length and width in mm) and the grout gap you'll be using.
-
Choose your lay pattern — straight lay adds 10% for cuts, diagonal or pattern lays add 15%.
-
Enter tiles per box from the carton label and read off your order in whole boxes.
What this calculator assumes
-
The grout gap is included in each tile's effective coverage, so larger gaps slightly reduce the number of tiles needed.
-
Straight lays carry a 10% waste allowance; diagonal and pattern lays carry 15%, reflecting the extra cuts at edges and around fittings.
-
Orders round up to whole boxes — tiles per box varies by product, so check the carton.
-
Buy all boxes from the same batch number where possible; batches can vary slightly in shade and size.
Frequently Asked Questions (F&Q)
FAQ 1
Question: How many tiles do I need per square metre?
Answer: It depends on tile size. A 300 × 300 mm tile is roughly 11 per m²; a 600 × 600 mm tile is roughly 2.8 per m². Enter your exact tile size and grout gap and this calculator works it out precisely.
FAQ 2
Question: How much extra tile should I buy for wastage?
Answer: 10% for a straight lay, 15% for diagonal or pattern lays. Complex rooms with lots of edges, nooks or floor wastes may need more. It's also worth keeping a few spare tiles for future repairs — matching a discontinued tile years later is nearly impossible.
FAQ 3
Question: Does the grout gap really change how many tiles I need?
Answer: Slightly, yes. A 3 mm gap versus a 1.5 mm gap changes each tile's effective coverage, and over a large floor that can add up to a box or more. The calculator includes your gap in the maths.
FAQ 4
Question: Can I use this for wall tiles?
Answer: Yes — the calculation is identical for walls. Calculate each wall (length × height), deduct large openings like windows and shower niches, and add the areas together.
FAQ 5
Question: Why do I have to buy whole boxes?
Answer: Most suppliers sell tiles by the box, not individually. The calculator rounds up to whole boxes so your order matches what you can actually buy — and the part-box excess doubles as your spares.
