6. PPE, Respiratory Protection, and Decontamination Protocols
Navigating silica regulations can be confusing for owner-builders. Whether you are applying for a NSW Owner Builder Permit or undertaking tiling or concreting work in QLD, understanding silica dust risk management is vital. Workers exposed to silica must receive approved training, and VET-accredited courses are recognised across TAS, QLD, NSW, and WA. Our $49 online silica course covers the essentials of dust control, identification of silica-containing materials (SCM), respiratory protection, and safe work method statement requirements.
How long does a silica awareness certificate last?
There is no formal expiration for a non-accredited silica awareness certificate. However, it is strongly recommended to refresh your training every 2–3 years or whenever regulations or workplace procedures are updated. Regardless of the state you operate in, employers are legally required to maintain records of silica training
Is silica awareness training a legal requirement?
WorkSafe authorities in NSW, QLD, WA, SA, TAS, ACT, and NT mandate that any worker involved in the processing or handling of crystalline silica substances that is high risk must undergo approved silica awareness training. Victoria has adopted a similar approach but does not prescribe a single specific course — employers must still provide adequate training and instruction to workers exposed to respirable crystalline silica.
What materials contain crystalline silica?
Silica is found in many common building materials including concrete, brick, mortar, tiles, pavers, fibre cement sheeting, engineered stone, and sandstone. Any time you cut, drill, grind, or sand these materials without proper dust controls, you may be generating respirable crystalline silica dust.
What is silicosis?
Silicosis is a serious and irreversible lung disease caused by inhaling fine silica dust particles. There is no cure. It can develop after prolonged exposure or, in severe cases, after shorter periods of very high exposure. Completing silica awareness training is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your long-term health on a building site.
Does this course satisfy the ACT silica requirement?
No. This non-accredited course is not valid for the ACT. WorkSafe ACT requires the nationally accredited 10830NAT course. This course is suitable for owner builders and workers in NSW, QLD, WA, and TAS only.
