Free Flooring Calculator — Whole Packs for Every Room

Work out how many packs of flooring to buy across your whole job. Add each room separately, choose your lay direction, and the calculator totals the area, applies the right waste allowance and rounds your order up to whole packs.

How to use this calculator

  1. Add each room and enter its dimensions — the calculator keeps a running total.

  2. Choose your lay direction: straight adds 10% for cuts, diagonal adds 15%.

  3. Enter the coverage per pack from the carton label (in m²).

  4. Read off your total order, rounded up to whole packs.

  5. Read off your total order, rounded up to whole packs.

What this calculator assumes

  • Waste allowances are 10% for straight lays and 15% for diagonal lays, covering end cuts, board offcuts and mistakes.

  • Coverage per pack varies widely between products (laminate, hybrid, engineered timber, vinyl plank) — always take the figure from your actual carton.

  • Orders round up to whole packs, which is how flooring is sold.

  • Long, narrow rooms and rooms with many doorways or angles generate more offcuts — consider a bigger buffer for complex layouts.

Frequently Asked Questions (F&Q)

FAQ 1
Question: How do I calculate how much flooring I need?
Answer: Measure each room's length × width in metres to get m², add all rooms together, add 10–15% for cuts, then divide by the coverage per pack. This calculator does all of that, room by room.

FAQ 2
Question: How much extra flooring should I buy?
Answer: 10% for a standard straight lay, 15% for diagonal. It's also worth keeping a spare pack after the job — boards get damaged over the years, and product lines get discontinued.

FAQ 3
Question: Can I calculate multiple rooms at once?
Answer: Yes — that's what this calculator is built for. Add each room separately and it totals the area, applies your waste allowance once across the job, and gives you a single pack count to order.

FAQ 4
Question: Does lay direction really change how much I need?
Answer: Yes. Diagonal lays create angled cuts at every wall, and most of those offcuts can't be reused. That's why the diagonal option carries a 15% allowance instead of 10%.

FAQ 5
Question: What does "coverage per pack" mean?
Answer: Each carton of flooring covers a set area — commonly somewhere between 1.5 and 2.5 m² depending on board size and count. It's printed on the carton and on the product page. Enter that figure and the calculator converts your area into packs.
