Free Brick & Block Calculator for Australian Walls

Work out how many bricks or blocks you need for a wall — as whole units and pallets, the way they're actually sold. Enter your wall area (or length × height), deduct doors and windows, and the calculator applies standard Australian coverage rates and a waste allowance to give you a supplier-ready order.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter your wall area directly in m², or enter wall length and height and let the calculator work it out.

  2. Deduct any openings — doors and windows don't need bricks.

  3. Choose your unit type: standard brick or concrete block.

  4. Adjust the waste allowance and units per pallet if needed, then read off your order in whole units and approximate pallets.

What this calculator assumes

  • Standard bricks are 230 × 110 × 76 mm, laid at approximately 50 bricks per m² of wall with a standard 10 mm mortar joint.

  • Concrete blocks are 390 × 190 × 190 mm, laid at approximately 12.5 blocks per m².

  • A waste allowance is applied for cuts, breakages and rejects, and the final figure rounds up to whole units.

  • Pallet counts are approximate — confirm units per pallet with your supplier, as it varies by brand and brick type.

  • Non-standard bricks (double-height, longformat, blocks with different face sizes) have different coverage rates — check the manufacturer's data sheet.

Frequently Asked Questions (F&Q)

FAQ 1
Question: How many bricks per square metre?
Answer: Standard Australian bricks (230 × 110 × 76 mm) lay at about 50 per m² of single-skin wall, including a 10 mm mortar joint. That's the rate this calculator uses.

FAQ 2
Question: How many besser blocks per square metre?
Answer: Standard 390 × 190 × 190 mm concrete blocks lay at about 12.5 per m². The calculator applies this automatically when you select the block option.

FAQ 3
Question: Should I deduct doors and windows?
Answer: Yes — for accuracy, deduct the area of large openings. The calculator has a dedicated field for this. For small openings it's common to leave them in as part of your waste buffer.

FAQ 4
Question: How much waste should I allow for bricks?
Answer: 5–10% is typical, covering cutting, breakage in transit and the occasional reject. Face brickwork from a single batch is worth over-ordering slightly, because a later batch may not colour-match.

FAQ 5
Question: Does this work for double-brick walls?
Answer: The calculator estimates a single skin (leaf). For double brick, calculate each leaf — or simply double the result if both skins are the same brick.
